Luís Oliveira Gonçalves (born June 22, 1960 in Angola ) is an Angolan football coach . In his home country he is considered a folk hero and is also called a professor because of his tactical coaching skills .

Player career

As a player, Gonçalves never made it beyond the Angolan second division and was therefore unable to achieve any notable successes. Among other things, he played for Sportivo Moata y Compania.

Coaching career

Gonçalves coached the Angolan national football team from 2003 to 2009 . Before this engagement, he was initially the coach of the local U-20 national team . With this team he won the U21 African Championship in 2001 . After taking over the senior national team, he was able to achieve the greatest international success in the history of Angolan football. In qualifying for the 2006 World Cup , they left Nigeria behind and were thus able to take part in the finals of a World Cup for the first time. As outsiders traded, you met in Group D of the teams from Portugal , Mexico and Iran . Contrary to expectations, Gonçalves' team showed a lot of tactical finesse and only narrowly lost 1-0 to Portugal in their first game. In the other two games, the team made two draws and was eliminated as third in the group. Nevertheless, the Angolans, with their excellent defensive work and fast counter-football, were considered one of the positive surprises of the tournament. The clubless goalkeeper João Ricardo , who had reactivated Luís Gonçalves, was also able to convince with good performances. Gonçalves was also the only African coach at the World Cup.
