Luíz Moutinho de Lima Alvares e Silva (* 1792 in Rio de Janeiro , † 1863 in Paris ) was a Brazilian diplomat .

Life

Luíz Moutinho de Lima Alvares e Silva joined the foreign service of the Secretaria d'Estado dos Negocios Estrangeiros on May 7, 1822. On August 12, 1822, Peter I of Brazil appointed him chargé d' affaires for the government in Washington, DC , where he negotiated the recognition of the government of Peter I, independent of Portugal . On February 22, 1824 he was now the highest-ranking official in the Foreign Ministry and was transferred to Rome on November 27, 1824 as chargé d' affaires for the Papal States, where he was accredited as envoy extraordinary and ministerial plénipotentiaire on May 5, 1842 . In October 1847 the Ministério dos Negócios da Justica instructed him to apply to the administration of the Holy See for a papal bull establishing the diocese of Rio Grande . On this matter, with a letter from Peter II of Brazil, he received an audience with Pope Gregory XVI.

In the meantime, Alvares e Silva was appointed envoy extraordinary and ministerial plénipotentiaire in Paris from February 28, 1834 to November 27, 1837 and from May 27, 1841 in the same function in Buenos Aires . After he returned to Rome on April 12, 1842, he was also accredited in the Kingdom of Tuscany on August 31, 1842 and from April 19, 1845 to December 10, 1847 in the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Duchy of Parma . Alvares e Silva was recalled from Rome on November 3, 1851 and retired on April 23, 1854 . For his 30 years of service he received 3.3 million réis . From 1855 he took on the role of lecturer in languages ​​and literature at the University of Rio de Janeiro.
