history

The company was founded in 1965 by the brothers Wilhelm and Georg Schaeffler in the Bühler industrial area as LuK GmbH. Originating was LuK from the L amellen- u nd K upplungsbau August Häussermann that in 1927 in Esslingen-Mettingen of August Häussermann was founded.

The production program of the company August Häussermann was after the Second World War by the inclusion of motor vehicle clutches and extended clutch plates. In addition, there was the production of disc springs , which became an essential part of the manufactured motor vehicle clutches. From May 1965 onwards, LuK started delivering disc spring clutches for the VW Beetle successors in series. From 1967 the company grew and expanded at home and abroad. Series production of vehicle clutches for other domestic and foreign vehicle manufacturers followed. In addition, double clutches for tractors and agricultural machines were also produced in series . Another business area is the trade in clutch spare parts. AS Autoteile-Service GmbH (then LuK Aftermarket, today Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket GmbH & Co. KG) in Langen near Frankfurt / Main emerged from this branch of business in 1975.

At the end of the 1970s, the production volume reached the DM 200 million mark for the first time . The dual mass flywheel (DMF) developed by LuK first went into series production in 1985 in the BMW 324d and was celebrated as a world first. In the meantime, it has established itself as vibration damping in drive trains. In 1995 LuK was the first clutch manufacturer to mass-produce the self-adjusting clutch (SAC). From 1999 to 2015, LuK supplied components for the continuously variableMultitronic ” transmission at Audi at the Bußmatten plant . On January 1, 2000, the Schaeffler Group took over the remaining 50% of the LuK Group from Valeo .

LuK GmbH has the following production facilities at its headquarters in Bühl:

  • LuK main plant in Bühl (stamping, hardening, assembly, administration)
  • LuK Bühl bus mats (CVT components)
  • LuK Sasbach (machining)
  • LuK Kappelrodeck (toolmaking)

The group's product range today includes clutch systems , torsion dampers and transmission components for CVT , automatic and dual clutch transmissions . Today, LuK is one of the largest employers in the " Regio Pamina " (Palatinate, Northern Alsace, Middle Upper Rhine) with more than 8,000 employees (5,500 at the headquarters in Bühl alone ).

Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket GmbH & Co. KG sells spare parts of the LuK, INA, FAG and Ruville brands for vehicle workshops and retailers.

In March 2006 the Pumps division (LuK Fahrzeughydraulik and LuK Automobiltechnik) was spun off as ixetic GmbH .

Luk is a member of the trade association for industrial companies in Baden .
