Lucas Hoffmeister (* in Prenzlau ; † 1576 in Berlin ) was a lawyer , doctor of both rights , electoral Privy Council and since 1552 judge at the Berlin Court of Justice .

family

Nothing has been known about the parentage and his exact date of birth. In 1548 he was admitted to the University of Frankfurt a. O. enrolled. He was therefore born around 1530. He studied law, namely secular (civil) law and canon law and thereby obtained the corresponding doctorate.

Hoffmeister was married to Anna Weinleben, the daughter of the Brandenburg lawyer and chancellor of Elector Joachim II of Brandenburg Johann Weinleben († February 10, 1558).

The Hoffmeister couple had two children:

  • Margaretha Hoffmeister. Around 1600 she married the court lawyer , landscape councilor and mayor of Cölln Sebastian Brunnemann for several years . Their daughter Maria Brunnemann married the council treasurer of Cölln Gabriel Wedigen († approx. 1639/40)

Life

The still existing chamber court in Berlin was created in 1540 as a result of the "Reformation of the chamber court" as a court with appointed judges that met continuously. The rule of Roman law, which was expanding over inheritance law, made it necessary for jurists to become members of the court. The previously applicable class element would be pushed back.

Hoffmeister, who was a doctor of both rights, i.e. of ecclesiastical and state law, is named after Mauritz von Schirding in the book by Voss mentioned in the bibliography below in the list of judges of the chamber court that he compiled, which first names his father-in-law Weinleben (since 1539) and Christoffel von Quitzow (since 1541) named in fourth place (since 1552). His two predecessors were obviously not lawyers.

When the Roman emperor was elected in Frankfurt in 1562, he was together with Chancellor Lampert Distelmeyer , the successor of Chancellor Weinleben, who died in 1558, in the entourage of Brandenburg Elector Joachim II.
