Lucas Kilian or Lukas Kilian (* 1579 in Augsburg ; † 1637 there ) was a German draftsman and engraver .

Life

Lucas Kilian was a son of the goldsmith Bartholomäus Kilian (1548–1587 / 88), who immigrated to Augsburg from Silesia, and his wife Maria Pfeyffelmann. He went to his stepfather, the engraver Dominicus Custos († 1612) in the apprenticeship; a half-brother of his was the Augsburg engraver and publisher Raphael Custos . Lucas Kilian toured Italy from 1601 to 1604. Then he worked for the publishing houses of his stepfather and his brother Wolfgang . In 1611 he became a member of the Greater Augsburg Council.

Lucas Kilian married the daughter Maria of the Augsburg merchant Miller in 1604 and, after her death in 1620, the daughter Magdalena of the merchant Ulrich Hartberger. He had 13 children.

Kilian is one of the masters of the so-called ornament stitch and is known for his Mauresque and cartilage ornament forms. Among other things, he wrote the new ABC booklet , which he dedicated to his brother-in-law the goldsmith and jeweler Melchior Gelb (1581–1654).
