Wolfgang Kilian (born May 10, 1581 in Augsburg ; † February 18, 1663 there ) was a German engraver and publisher.

life and work

Wolfgang Kilian was born the son of the goldsmith Bartholomäus Kilian (1548–1588), who had lived in Augsburg since around 1575. Wolfgang's mother Maria Pfeiffelmann (also Pfeyffelmann) married after the death of her husband the copperplate engraver Dominicus Custos (around 1560–1612), who trained his step-sons Lucas Kilian (1579–1631) and Wolfgang Kilian as a copperplate engraver. After his brother's return from Italy in 1604, Wolfgang was able to travel south himself. He stayed for a long time in Mantua , Milan , Venice and Rome , where he made numerous re-engravings of paintings by Tintoretto , Veronese , Bassano and Farinato . After his return to Augsburg (1608), he married Susanne Endris on January 31, 1611. During this time, many depictions of plants and the title page of the Hortus Eystettensis were created . Until the death of his father-in-law he worked in his publishing house, then he founded his own publishing house.

The largest part of his work is made up of portraits: such as the series of portraits of the Dukes of Bavaria and Saxony and the Archdukes of Austria, but also many individual engravings. In 1626 a bird's eye view of the city of Augsburg appeared in eight parts, the so-called “Kilianplan”. He also brought out architectural brochures for the Augsburg town hall and armory . He also created series of engravings, such as the twelve months and the nine muses as well as many theses .

Kilian had six sons and nine daughters, three of whom each reached adulthood: Johann Baptist Kilian (1623–1697) became a goldsmith, Philipp Kilian (1628–1693) and Bartholomäus Kilian the Younger (1630–1696) became engravers.

Individual evidence

  1. Michels gives the date of his death. In older sources there is often 1662. Haemmerle gives in Thieme-Becker Volume 20, 1662, but corrected a year later in the book Evangelical Totenregister zur Kunst- und Handwerksgeschichte Augsburg. Augsburg 1928, p. 9.
  2. Michels gives 1620 as the marriage date: Michels: Philosophy and praise of the ruler as a picture. 1987, p. 20.
