Lucas Samaras

Lucas Samaras ( Greek Λουκάς Σαμαράς , born September 14, 1936 in Kastoria , Greece ) is an American- Greek painter and sculptor.

He settled in the USA in 1948 and acquired citizenship in addition to Greek in 1955. In 1959 he had his first solo exhibition at the Reuben Gallery in New York . He was a participant in the 4th documenta in Kassel in 1968, represented as an artist at Documenta 5 (1972) in the Individual Mythologies section , Documenta 6 in 1977 and Documenta 14 . In 2009 he was represented in the Greek pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale with the installation PARAXENA .

He uses elements such as knives, razor blades and needles for his works of art.

His works are represented in many large collections including: Getty Museum (Los Angeles), Museum of Modern Art (New York City), National Gallery of Australia (Canberra), Tate Gallery (London), National Gallery of Art (Washington DC ), Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington DC), the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York City), and the National Gallery of Art in Athens.
