The Luciocephalinae are a subfamily of the Osphronemidae , which in turn are a family of the labyrinth fish (Anabantoidei). The subfamily is composed of four genera and nine species, all of which are found in Southeast Asia.

A common feature of all species are eggs, which have a spiral structure on the surface, which probably serves as a guidance system for the sperm. All species of the Luciocephalinae have a pointed, terminal mouth and are mouthbrooders . The threadfish , which until recently belonged to the Luciocephalinae, now form an independent subfamily, the Trichogastrinae.
