The pointed head gourami ( Ctenops nobilis ) is a freshwater fish species from the suborder of the labyrinth fish . It occurs in northeast India ( West Bengal , Bihar and Assam ) and Bangladesh .

features

Pointed head gouramis are 7.5 to 10 cm long and have an elongated, moderately high-backed and laterally strongly flattened body and a head that tapers into a pointed mouth. The dorsal fin is relatively short and stands far back, the anal fin is very long, the caudal fin is rounded. The pelvic fins are directly below the pectoral fins. The basic color is brownish, the fins are colorless. Two bright, silvery longitudinal stripes run along the sides of the body, the upper one from the upper edge of the gill cover to the caudal fin base, the lower one from the pectoral fin base to the lower caudal fin base.

Way of life and reproduction

The pointed head gourami lives in overgrown rivers, ponds and lakes in the upper water layers and is rare. Like all members of the Osphronemidae family , the pointed head gourami takes care of the brood , it is a larvophilic mouthbrooder .

Systematics

The pointed head gourami was described in 1845 by the British doctor and zoologist John McClelland , who worked in India, and is the only species in the genus Ctenops . The generic name is derived from the Greek and refers to the comb-like serrations ("thorns") of the pre-orbitals, a bone in front of the eye ( kteis, ktenos = "comb", ops = A "" uge). The Latin epithet nobilis means “elegant, noble”. The pointed head gourami is part of the subfamily Luciocephalinae , which is characterized by eggs that have a spiral structure on the surface. The Luciocephalinae include the pointed head gourami, the chocolate gouramis ( Sphaerichthys ), the Burma chocolate gouramis ( Parasphaerichthys ) and the carnivorous pike heads ( Luciocephalus ).

Danger

The species is classified as "Near Threatened" by the IUCN . H. that there is no urgent need for protection. The pointed head gourami has proven to be very sensitive and obsolete in aquariums. The offspring succeeded the Danish aquarist S. Bitsch.
