Karl Kronberger (also: Carl Kronberger ; born March 7, 1841 in Freistadt , Upper Austria; † October 27, 1921 in Munich ) was an Austrian genre painter .

Life

Karl Kronberger was born as the son of an innkeeper in Freistadt. A memorial plaque is attached to the house where he was born in Böhmergasse (today 'Gasthof Deim' with a stinging sign of a golden stag) He first completed an apprenticeship with a Linz decorative painter . In 1869 he went to Munich, where Hermann Dyck was his teacher and also briefly attended the local academy ( H. Anschütz , G. Hiltensperger ). Kronberger stayed in Munich and soon got the nickname "Austrian Spitzweg " because of his humorous, warm-hearted genre scenes . Starting with scenes with many figures, Kronberger later devoted himself particularly to the life of vagabonds and strolling craft boys . The reproduction of his works in widely read magazines (such as the gazebo ) helped him to become very popular during his lifetime. Kronberger is buried in the old part of the forest cemetery in Munich.
