Ludus de nato Infante mirificus ( Latin : miraculous play of the birth of the child ) is a Christmas play by Carl Orff . It was premiered on December 11, 1960 at the Württemberg State Theater in Stuttgart under the direction of Heinz Mende .

content

In his Christmas play, Carl Orff is on the one hand strongly committed to the alpine nativity scene tradition, but on the other hand goes beyond the framework of an often shallow, upright shepherd romance and makes the Christmas events visible as a world-changing, cosmic event.

In the midst of the good forces (embodied by the invisible angels) and the forces of evil (embodied by the witches) man is clamped. He meets us in the familiar figure of the Shepherd and, touched by the message, has to choose between faith and unbelief.

The bearer of the event is predominantly the Bavarian language , which makes the deep dimensions of the Christmas event tangible in a vivid and enigmatic manner, without a homely fad. This Christmas game is a linguistic work of art, which is given a contemplative framework, especially through the musical accompaniment with harp and guitar .

The piece forms the counterpart to the Comoedia de Christi Resurrectione from 1956, the author's Easter play. Orff combined the two works into a diptych in 1970.

In July 1971, a record version of the game was recorded in Munich under Orff's own direction and the musical direction of Kurt Eichhorn . On her worked u. a. Thomas Stewart , Elfie Pertramer , Maxl Graf , Fritz Strassner , Ludwig Schmid-Wildy and Gustl Weishappel were there too . Children of the Tölzer Boys Choir took over speaking voices. The Bavarian Radio Choir and members of the Munich Radio Orchestra also took part.
