Ludwig-Ernst Toelle started out as a manufacturer in Halberstadt . In 1851 he married Julie Noelle (1824–1897), daughter of the metal goods manufacturer Peter Caspar Noelle (1790–1875), Noelle Brothers, Lüdenscheid . They had three sons and two daughters and lived at Loher Strasse 5 . The Barmer Zeitung reported on October 2, 1886 that "Ludwig-Ernst Toelle fell asleep gently after severe suffering".

The Toelle company

The Toelle family owned the factory for rubber-elastic goods such as suspenders , garter belts etc., cords and braids , bandage fabrics , founded in 1853 at Loher Straße 9 . After the death of Ludwig-Ernst Toelle, it was taken over by the eldest son Hugo-Ernst Toelle (born March 26, 1852, † September 21, 1921, chairman of the Barmer Kunstverein 1908-1914). He was mentioned as the owner in the address book of 1909. In 1919 the company was called Ludwig-Ernst Toelle, Nachf., Inh. Walter Rosenbaum and was still located on the Loh . After the end of the war until the 1970s, it was based in Langerfeld at Badische Strasse 8-10. The trace of the Toelle family is then lost.

The Toelle family was closely linked to aviation history . The Toelles were among the founding members and sponsors of the Aviation Association and the Rheinisch-Westfälische Motor-Luftfahrtsgesellschaft . Ludwig-Ernst Toelle was also an aviation pioneer, but contrary to other published research results, he did not crash with a gas balloon like his grandson and son of Hugo Toelle, Max Otto Toelle (* March 8, 1878; † July 13, 1910), the together with other like-minded people had a fatal accident with the airship Erbslöh near Leichlingen . Ludwig-Ernst Toelle regularly walked over the Barmer Südhöhenzug and enjoyed the wide view of the Bergisches Land . This is where his idea of ​​building a lookout tower arose . With this edition he bequeathed 15,000 gold marks to the Barmer Beautification Association . In 1888 the Toelleturm was opened to the public.
