Ludwig Alfons August von Thompson

Ludwig Alfons August von Thompson (born August 22, 1823 in Weimar , † October 1, 1904 in Ludwigshof bei Ranis ) was a Saxon-Weimar captain, later a royal Prussian major general and most recently the commander of the 38th infantry brigade.

His parents were Ludwig von Thompson († November 9, 1863) and his wife Auguste Rühlmann († October 3, 1867). His father was a Russian major and then an adjutant to the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar. His sister Thekla (born September 27, 1826) was married to Baron Wassilli von Wegner called von Lincker and Lützenwick (born April 2, 1824).

Life

He received his education at the educational institute in Schnepfenthal and then at the grammar school in Gera. After graduating, he joined the Saxon-Weimar regiment as a musketeer on April 1, 1841. There he was promoted to Portepeefähnrich on September 20, 1842, to Seconde Lieutenant on May 5, 1843, and to Premier Lieutenant on June 21, 1848. In 1849 he fought at Düppel and Fredericia during the first Schleswig War . After the war he was promoted to captain on September 30, 1856, and on April 1, 1859, he joined the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar as a wing adjutant . On May 14, 1862 he became Grand Duke Chamberlain and at the same time company commander in the Saxon-Weimar infantry regiment. During the German War of 1866, he took part on the Prussian side in the campaign in southwest Germany. After the war the Prussian military convention came about and the regiment was integrated into the Prussian army. On September 25, 1867, Thomson also joined the Prussian Army, where he was aggregated as a captain in the 66th Infantry Regiment . He was promoted to major on March 22, 1868 and assigned to the regiment on July 7, 1868. On July 21, 1870 he was appointed commander of the fusilier battalion. During the Franco-Prussian War he was seriously wounded in the Battle of Beaumont and was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class on September 2, 1870 .

After the war, on June 20, 1872, he was posted to Mezieres as a commander in charge of business and was then aggregated into the 66th Infantry Regiment. On May 22, 1873 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on July 12, 1873 as commander of the III. Battalion transferred to the 80th Infantry Regiment . As early as July 2, 1875, he was commissioned with the command of the 40th Infantry Regiment and made a la suite of the regiment. On July 22, 1875 he was confirmed as regimental commander and on March 22, 1876 promoted to colonel. He remained there until February 11, 1882, when he was entrusted with the command of the 38th Infantry Brigade and was placed a la suite of the regiment. On March 11, 1882 he was confirmed as brigade commander and on March 22, 1882 promoted to major general. But he suffered more and more from the long-term effects of his wounding and was put up for retirement on January 12, 1884 , and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves .

He died on October 1, 1904 in Ludwigshof near Ranis.

family

Thomson married on May 21, 1862 in Weimar Johanna Viktoria Friederike Auguste Seeber-Wallenroth (* February 5, 1829 - December 3, 1899), a daughter of Michael Heinrich Seeber zu Sondershausen and stepdaughter of the widowed war councilor von Grave née von Wallenroth . The marriage remained childless.
