Karl Ludwig Bernhard Christian Buchhorn (born April 18, 1770 in Halberstadt , † November 13, 1856 in Berlin ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

Between 1790 and 1793 Ludwig Buchhorn was at the Art Academy of Berlin and there a. a. Student with Daniel Berger . In addition to aquatint and lithographs , Buchhorn also took over the technique in the Crayon style from his lecturers .

In 1797 Buchhorn got a job as a draftsman and copperplate engraver at the Chalkographische Gesellschaft zu Dessau and worked there until 1803. After that he worked as a freelance artist for some time.

In 1806 he settled in Berlin and worked again with the academy. In 1811 the academy took him as a regular. Member and appointed him three years later as a lecturer in drawing and copperplate engraving. In the same year Buchhorn founded the Berlin Artists' Association together with a few colleagues .

After the death of his teacher Daniel Berger, Buchhorn was entrusted with the management of the Academic Copper Engraving School in 1824 . During his teaching activity, Buchhorn had many students; u. a. to be mentioned here are Friedrich Eduard Eichens , Rudolf Hertzberg , Hermann Kramer Eduard Mandel , Adolph Schroedter .

In his early works, the “copying” of old masters was a major focus of his work. Influenced by Franz Krüger and Johann Gottfried Schadow , Buchhorn soon found his own style and in his later works he worked more and more “according to nature”. Over time, Buchhorn became one of the more important draftsmen in Berlin alongside Schadow.

The painters Johann Carl Kretzschmar and Georg Friedrich Schöner portrayed their colleague Buchhorn.
