Ludwig Egidius Ronig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ludwig Egidius Ronig , also known as Ludwig Ernst or Ludwig Ernest Ronig , (born January 27, 1885 in Cologne , † November 28, 1959 there ) was a German art and glass painter of the 20th century. He is considered a representative of the New Objectivity and Magical Realism .

Life

Ronig was born the son of an innkeeper and began drawing and painting when he was sixteen. From 1903 to 1913 he studied painting. Before attending the Art Academy in Düsseldorf and the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart , he made a short detour to the Grand Ducal Saxon Art School in Weimar . With study trips to Holland and Italy , he continued an old tradition of German painters. During the First World War he was called up for military service. When he returned to civilian life, he mainly dealt with landscape painting and, probably for economic reasons, made his first paintings with religious themes. In the twenties Ronig took part in collective exhibitions, such as in 1924 in Düsseldorf, 1928 in the Cologne Art Association and in 1929 in the German Association of Artists .

In the thirties Ronig created his first stained glass windows for the Church of Saint Servatius in Cologne-Ostheim . Soon afterwards, she ordered a complete cycle of the Stations of the Cross. In 1932 he became a founding member of Group 32 , which also included Heinrich Maria Davringhausen , Peter Hecker, Heinrich Hoerle , Anton Räderscheidt and Franz W. Seiwert . Under this new influence, he burned part of his paintings from his youth that same year.

In 1936 he took part in the Salon ars sacra , which was dedicated to religious topics. The exhibition was finally closed by a commission of the Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda under Goebbels. The same commission hung a self-portrait from Ronig in 1939, but at the same time he received an important commission for a large window in the stairwell of the Oberbergamt in Bonn. After years of lower productivity under the pressure of the Hitler regime, after 1945 Ronig returned to themes and painting styles that he had developed before the years of the dictatorship. Until his death he joined various artists' associations, such as the Rheinische Künstlergesellschaft Köln , the West German Artists Association as a founding member and the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Kölner Künstler . He also took part in many collective exhibitions . He died on November 28, 1959, almost 75 years old. His widow, Anna Ronig, tried to keep his memory alive after his death: several solo exhibitions in 1965, 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1984 were dedicated to his works. For almost thirty years only the name of a street in Cologne-Ostheim has been a reminder of Ludwig Ronig. One of his intimate friends was the well-known German photographer August Sander , who had photographed him several times.

Works

In 1924 a book publisher, the publishing house of the book community , sent him to Italy and Sicily to have illustrations for their publications made there. In 1926 Ronig painted his first larger work: a mural in an inn, the Jägerhof in Cologne-Poll, which extends over two sides of the wall and depicts the work of fishermen on the banks of the Rhine. In the twenties and thirties he painted numerous still lifes. In 1950 Ronig was awarded the Karl Osthaus Prize of the city of Hagen for his self-portrait The Beekeeper from 1949 (see illustration) .
