Ludwig Friedrich Hofelich (born October 30, 1842 in Leipzig , † January 12, 1903 in Munich ) was a German painter and wood engraver.

Born as the son of the tailor Johann Conrad Hofelich and his wife Christiane, he learned the craft of wood engraving from Johann Gottfried Flegel in Leipzig. His half-brother, Karl Tetzel, also became a wood engraver. In 1860 Hofelich came to St. Petersburg to collect money for his painting studies with wood carving. He began his studies at the Imperial Art Academy in Saint Petersburg . He also studied piano and languages.

In 1865 Hofelich returned to Leipzig and continued his painting studies at the local art academy, later also in Dresden and Berlin.

In 1868 he moved to Salzburg and devoted himself to landscape painting. After study trips to Switzerland, Italy and Bavaria, he finally stayed in Munich, where his works brought him success. 1873 Hofelich picked up the stylus in order to earn more money. In 1877 he married Laura Seelinger, a talented pianist, in Stuttgart.
