Ludwig Friedrich Theodor Hain (born July 5, 1781 in Stargard in Pomerania , † June 27, 1836 in Munich ) was a writer, lexicon editor and bibliographer of incunabula .

life and work

Ludwig Hain had been working in Leipzig since 1812 as editor of the Brockhaus'schen Conversationslexikon . He then lived as a private scholar in Munich until his death.

In addition to some translations, he left a list of incunables , the Repertorium bibliographicum , the first part of which he published in 1826; the second to fourth parts appeared posthumously in 1838. Hain used the Munich holdings when he compiled the "Wiegendrucke" or incunabula. When setting up, he took into account the essential characteristics, such as format and font , and the collation ; he also reproduced the " Incipit " and the " Explicit " exactly. However, he created his index alphabetically according to authors, a feature not characteristic of incunabula. It remained fragmentary and is gradually being replaced by the complete catalog of incunabula , which is currently in progress .
