Ludwig II of Frohburg
Ludwig II of Frohburg , called Garewart , was Bishop of Basel from 1164 to March 1179 .
Ludwig II of Frohburg was one of the sons of Count Adalbero I of Frohburg (adult from 1095; † between 1146 and 1152) and Sophia, a presumed daughter of Count Rudolf von Lenzburg . Mentioned for the first time in 1145, he was Kirchen vogt von Onoldswil (today Niederdorf and Oberdorf in Waldenburgertal ). In 1164 he was elected Bishop of Basel as the successor to his relative Ortlieb von Frohburg . Probably around 1167 he received from the antipope Paschal III. the episcopal ordination. Because the cathedral chapter complained that he had wasted church property, Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa restricted his official powers in 1174. Finally, in March 1179, he was deposed as Bishop of Basel by the Third Lateran Council because of simony .
