Opinioner worked from 1960 to 1991 as an astronomer at the Sonneberg observatory in Thuringia . As a botanist, he was a specialist in mosses and lichens .

Together with his longtime partner, the bryologist Wiebke Schröder (1934–2018), he researched the distribution of mosses throughout Germany over a period of 12 years, seven full months a year, and laid the foundation for the publication of the three-volume work Distribution Atlas der Moose Germany , which appeared in 2007.
