Ludwig Reuleaux

Ludwig Reuleaux (born May 15, 1828 in Eschweiler - pump ; † November 9, 1900 Mainz ) was a Mainz entrepreneur, Hessian politician and former president of the Mainz Chamber of Commerce .

Life and family

Ludwig Reuleaux was the son of the mechanical engineering mechanic and entrepreneur Johann Joseph Reuleaux (1796-1833) from Eschweiler-Pump and his wife Heloise Walburga nee Graeser (1803-1867) from the same place. His older brother Carl became an engineer for gun and ammunition foundries, the younger Franz became an engineer and professor for mechanical engineering. Reuleaux, who was of the Catholic faith, did a commercial apprenticeship and initially worked as a chemist in Cologne before he started working in Mainz in 1851.

In July 1852 the merchant was proven to be a citizen of Mainz. In 1854 he became a partner in a materials store and oil paint factory. The establishment of our own pitch and varnish factory was an expansion of this business. His daughter Theresia Margaretha Wilhelmine (born August 20, 1852) had been married to the future mayor of Mainz Heinrich Gassner since 1874 . The daughter Heloise Johanna Wilhelmine was married to the sparkling wine manufacturer Johann Christoph Kupferberg, Agnes Maria (* Mainz June 17, 1855) had been married to Amand Anton Wuidart, a merchant in London, since 1877. Maria (1859–1942) had been married to Karl Jakob Preetorius (1854–1947), Dr. jur., Attorney General in Darmstadt. She was the mother of the graphic artist Emil Preetorius .

Public Relations and Politics

Reuleaux took on a variety of political tasks in public, including almost 30 years as a city councilor. When Kommerzienrat Franz Schott resigned from the mayor's office in June of the war year 1871 , he was elected as his successor, but soon resigned for personal reasons. Ludwig Reuleaux was a member and from 1872 to 1879 President of the Mainz Chamber of Commerce . In addition, he was president of the commercial court and the trade association there. He was also on the board of directors of the Hessische Ludwigsbahn and chairman of the supervisory board of the Mainzer Aktien-Bierbrauerei and the champagne producer Kupferberg .
