Ludwig Roselius (composer)

Ludwig Wilhelm Roselius (born August 2, 1902 in Kassel , † February 6, 1977 in Bremen ) was a German composer , music critic and conductor .

Life

Roselius was the son of the merchant Georg Roselius. He was a relative of the coffee merchant Ludwig Roselius (1874–1943).

He graduated from the Realgymnasium in Berlin and was a répétiteur at the German Opera House in Berlin in 1921/22. From 1921 to 1923 he was a master student of the Prussian Academy of Arts in the composition class with Georg Schumann. At the same time studied musicology, philosophy and German at the Berlin University with Clemens Schmalstich , Otto Taubmann and H. Abert and J. Petersen. He received his doctorate in 1924 at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin through his ancestor Andreas Raselius (1563–1602) as a motet composer in philosophy. As a freelance composer and pianist, he worked first in Berlin and then in Bremen. From 1946 to 1949 he was the musical director of the Bremen Art Theater . From 1946 he also worked as a music critic for the newspaper Weser-Kurier . He had a significant influence on the musical life of Bremen. He received the Bremen Music Prize in 1964 , and in 1967 he was a guest of honor at the Deutsche Akademie Rome Villa Massimo. He was a full member of GEMA for the composer profession.

As a composer he has been creating successful operas , composed symphonies , chamber music , piano pieces , radio play stages and film music as well as songs since 1928 .
