Ludwig Theodor Preußer (also Preusser or von Preusser , born May 11, 1822 in Rendsburg , † April 5, 1849 off Eckernförde ) was a Schleswig-Holstein NCO who played a decisive role in the battle near Eckernförde .

Life

The Schleswig-Holstein uprising had come to a temporary end with the Treaty of Malmö on August 24, 1848, but flared up again on Maundy Thursday 1849: A Danish squadron under the command of Frederik August Paludan entered the bay of Eckernförde on April 4 . Of the two of Werner von Siemens -scale batteries on the beach were the ships that had dropped anchor, initially not be achieved with balls. The Danes attacked the city on April 5, despite an onshore wind that was unfavorable for them. The attacks were carried out from the ship of the line Christian VIII and the frigate Gefion and consisted mainly of broadside shots. Ludwig Theodor Preusser, who commanded the south hill in Eckernförde, responded with targeted single fire. It was finally possible to shoot through the anchor cable of the Gefion , whereupon the Danes asked for a truce at 1 p.m., but at 4.30 p.m. they reopened fire themselves and now glowing bullets set in, although their two sailing ships were unable to maneuver. The shots were answered from the land until the Danes declared their surrender. Under Captain Eduard Julius Jungmann and Ludwig Theodor Preusser, the Schleswig-Holsteiners had defeated the Danes, who had fired around 5680 bullets, with around 900 shots.

Preusser asked the Danish crew to leave their ship Christian VIII . According to the Germans, it was still on fire at the time, but Paludan later reported that the fires had already been extinguished when the ship was abandoned. However, the ship exploded around 8 p.m. for an unexplained cause. Preusser, who was just on board, was killed. The Preussian barracks , the Preusser building in the Carlshöhe barracks and a memorial in the Kurpark of Eckernförde on the site of the former southern hill are reminiscent of his deed, as is a street name, and streets in Kiel , Tungendorf and other cities were named after him. He was also posthumously promoted to lieutenant. Jungmann became major, but fought in vain for the rest of his life for the prize money for the captured Gefion .

The battle of Eckernförde had an uplifting psychological effect for a short time, but this soon came to an end with the defeat of the Schleswig-Holsteiners at Fredericia .
