The Ludwig Monument (actually monument to the Grand Duke Louis the IV. ) Is a 1895 on the initiative of the municipality and with funding from the population on the former parade grounds in Worms am Rhein built monument . It commemorates the military achievements of the Hessian Grand Duke Ludwig IV (Hessen-Darmstadt), who died in 1892, as commander of the grand ducal troops, especially the Grand Ducal Hessian (25th) Infantry Division in front of Gravelotte and Metz in the war of 1870/71.

Here he commanded his troops in the war against France, the country that had raised his ancestor from Landgrave to Grand Duke by Napoleon's grace, and under the command of Prussia, before whose troops his predecessor Grand Duke Ludwig III. (Hessen-Darmstadt) had fled to Worms from his territory on the right bank of the Rhine.

The design of this 24.30 m high monument comes from city building officer Karl Hofmann , from whom u. a. also the plans for the Rhine bridge, the water tower and the hospital originate. The plastic jewelry comes from the sculptor Johann Hirt . The monument was unveiled on July 15, 1895 in the presence of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig and his sister Princess Viktoria .

With the construction of the monument, the Paradeplatz, today Ludwigsplatz, was redesigned as a green decorative area with a central water basin and a small fountain. The monument itself was built at the western end of the square, consisting of an oval fountain, behind which an obelisk sits enthroned on a pedestal with a gargoyle. Symmetrically flanked by stairs and two stone lions.

The memorial survived the bombing raids of World War II with minor damage, but the jewelry complex was rededicated as a public car park in the post-war period. The monument was only removed with the construction of an underground car park under Ludwigsplatz, which was opened in 1975. At the beginning of the 1990s, the above-ground parking spaces were given up again and the space was redesigned with a continuous, light-colored stone paving. In the course of this, the memorial complex returned to its original location in a modified layout as a reconstruction .
