The Ludwigsturm is a 27.5 m high observation tower built in 1882 , which is located on the 242.2 m above sea level. NHN high Ludwigshöhe in Darmstadt-Bessungen . It was named after the Grand Duke Ludewig I of Hesse .
The round tower made of bricks has a diameter of 6 m at the bottom and 5 m at the top. It is surrounded up to a height of approx. 5 m by the lower viewing platform (diameter 13 m), which is supported by nine brick pillars and six metal supports. A circumferential approx. 1.1 m high metal parapet is attached within the crenellated boundary of the platform.
After paying the entrance fee at the Ludwigsklause, access to the tower is initially through a lattice door via a short straight concrete staircase, which is divided into two staircases with 20 steps each at a height of 1.25 m m high platform. The space in the tower below the platform is closed by a door opposite the lattice door. Above this is the entrance to the tower on the platform, which is framed with ornate sandstone and at the top bears a memorial plaque for the construction of the tower. A sandstone spiral staircase with 99 steps begins next to a TP embedded in the center of the tower, ending on a concrete slab at a height of 23.7 m, from which a straight 13-step metal staircase leads to the upper viewing platform at a height of 26.2 m. The outlet opening, next to which another measurement point is embedded in the floor, can be closed with a steel flap.
A flagpole is attached to the upper viewing platform, which rises approx. 5 m above the tower parapet. From here there is a very good all-round view, which is even improved thanks to a permanently installed telescope .
Above the entrance to the tower, at a height of 14.3 m, there is a small balcony attached to the outside of the tower, the access door of which, however, is locked. At the height of the parapet of the balcony, an approx. 1 m wide decorative ribbon with a diamond pattern is attached to the Ludwigsturm. To leave the tower, a bell has to be pressed inside the entrance gate, whereupon the host of the Ludwigsklause presses the electric door opener.
