Ludwik Wiśniewski , born as Marian Wiśniewski (* 1936 in Skierbieszów , Zamość district ) is a Polish Dominican who in autumn 2010 sharply criticized fellow believers and clergy in a letter to the Polish episcopate .

Life

Wiśniewski entered the Dominican Order in 1953 and was ordained a priest in 1961 . He was a student pastor in Gdansk , Lublin , Breslau and Krakow . According to a 1977 report by the Stasi , he was one of the most dangerous opponents in Poland.

He was a co-organizer and supporter of the Movement for Defense of Human and Civil Rights - Ruch Obrony Praw Człowieka i Obywatela (ROPCiO), the Committee for the Defense of Workers (KOR), the Young Poland Movement - Ruch Młodej Polski . Since 1980 he was chaplain of the Solidarność movement. During martial law in the 1980s, he was a big proponent of a "non-violence" struggle with the communist regime. After regaining independence in the 1990s, he worked in the parish of St. Catherine in Saint Petersburg . In 2005 he finally returned to Lublin, where he founded a school for young people - the Złota 9 Academy. In 2006 he was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta by the Polish President .

In a letter to the Polish Bishops' Conference in 2010 that sparked months of discussion in Poland, he wrote, among other things:

“Poland has a very large number of young and committed priests. But according to my assessment, over 50 percent of the clergy are 'infected' with xenophobia, nationalism and shamefully guarded anti-Semitism. Many priests have crossed the line between gospel and politics. Of course, priests have a right to their own opinion on social and political issues, and that's not a bad thing. It is bad when the liturgy - which primarily serves to worship God in love - contains inappropriate words for support and condemnation of certain political parties and politicians. "

The reactions to Wiśniewski's views in Poland are divided.
