Lomnitzer Spitze cable car

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The aerial cableway to the Lomnitzerspitze in the High Tatras ( Slovakia ) is an aerial cableway that was originally divided into two sections ( Tatranská Lomnica - Skalnaté Pleso (German: Steinbachsee) with a length of 4137 meters and Skalnaté Pleso - Lomnický štít with 1867 meters) was executed.

In 1937 the section up to the intermediate station in Štart and in 1940 the whole line went into operation. The intermediate station “Štart” in the lower section got its name from the nearby start of the old natural bobsleigh track. It is in the middle of the route, both cars stopped at the same time and opposite the platforms.

The lower section from Tatranská Lomnica to Skalnaté Pleso was designed in such a way that it could also be operated in the middle of the route in the “Štart” station in the form of two independent cable cars .

The valley station Tatranská Lomnica is at a height of 905 meters next to the Grandhotel Praha, the middle station Štart at 1160 meters and the mountain station Skalnaté Pleso at an altitude of 1765 meters. Here you already have an excellent view of the hill country around Poprad and Kežmarok, which is more than 1000 m lower . Only a single wagon runs between Skalnaté Pleso and Lomnický Štit, the machinery is located in Skalnaté Pleso. At the summit station, the pull ropes are only diverted. The ropes of the upper section run freely between Skalnaté Pleso and a support directly in front of the mountain station.

In 1973 an additional small cabin orbit was put into operation between Tatranská Lomnica and Skalnaté pleso . Both lifts run parallel between Štart and Skalnaté Pleso, but the valley station of the small cabin lift is further west and closer to the train station. The route has a bend at its own intermediate station Štart, both sections can be operated independently or continuously. The new system was significantly more efficient despite a slightly lower travel speed. Nevertheless, long queues formed at both valley stations when the weather was good.

The uppermost section between Skanaté pleso and the summit was rebuilt between 1986 and 1989, with the uppermost support being removed about 100 m below the mountain station. The new cabin was supplied by the Swiss company Gangloff and made its first trip on June 24, 1989.

At the end of 1999 the lower section was shut down due to technical defects. The traffic was taken over by the small cabin lift. The upper section from Steinbachsee to Lomnitzer Spitze is still in operation.

In 2010 and 2011 the ropes and supports of the lower section were removed. However, the valley station and the intermediate station will continue to exist as they are cultural monuments. There are plans to set up a cable car museum in the valley station; the first pillar at the valley station will also be retained for this. The use of the intermediate station Štart is not yet known.

The last section of the cable car to the Lomnický Peak (Slov. Lomnický štít , 2634 m) begins at the Skalnaté Pleso station . It is designed without a support and is operated from a single cabin with a capacity of 15 people, with a journey taking about 9 minutes. The cable car, which is very dependent on wind and weather, runs every 20 minutes, so the hourly capacity to the summit is 45 people. In addition, visitors can spend a maximum of 50 minutes on the summit. The top station is located at an altitude of 2622 meters and offers an excellent view of the peaks of the High Tatras. The Lomnicky Peak is only 30 meters lower than the highest peak of the "smallest high mountains of Europe," the Gerlsdorfer peak (Gerlachovský štít, 2655 m).
