biography

Luis Abinader is the son of the Lebanese entrepreneur and politician José Rafael Abinader Wasaf and the Rosa Sula Corona Caba. He is married to Raquel Arbaje Soni of Lebanese origin (daughter of the entrepreneur Elías Arbaje Farah and Margarita Soni, both descendants of Lebanese immigrants), with whom he has three children: Esther Patricia, Graciela Lucía and Adriana Margarita Abinader Arbaje.

He passed the school leaving examination at the Colegio Loyola (now Instituto Politécnico Loyola) and graduated from the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo with a degree in economics. He undertook postgraduate studies in project management at the Arthur D. Little Institute in Cambridge (Massachusetts) as well as business administration at Harvard University there and management at Dartmouth College in Hanover (New Hampshire) .

He is president of the family-owned group Abicor, which carries out major tourism projects. The company Cementos Santo Domingo, of which he is Vice President, also emerged from the group. He was president of the Association of Hotels in Sosua and Cabarete and is a board member of the National Association of Hotels and Restaurants (ASONAHORES) and the Foundation of the University of O&M (Organization & Method) in Santo Domingo.

2012 presidential election

In the 2012 presidential election , Abinader was a candidate for the Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD) for the vice-presidency. The election, however, won with 51.21% of the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) with Danilo Medina against the former President Hipólito Mejía from the PRD (46.95%).

2016 and 2020 presidential elections

For the 2016 presidential election , Abinader was nominated as the official candidate of the Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM) and its electoral alliance after winning the internal party election against former President Hipólito Mejía . During the campaign, Abinader also visited the important Dominican colony in New York.

The PLD with incumbent President Danilo Medina clearly won the election with 61.76 to 34.99%. Abinader accused the PLD of having abused its power as a ruling party. He was subsequently criticized for his lack of self-criticism.

The PRM split off from the Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD) in 2014 after a two-year dispute over the party leadership between party president Miguel Vargas Maldonado and Hipólito Mejía. For this purpose, the voting platform Alianza Social Dominicana (before 1994 Alianza Social Demócrata), which is related to the Abinader family, was renamed Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM). In the 2016 presidential election, the PRD joined the electoral alliance of the former opponent Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) of the incumbent President Danilo Medina and contributed 5.85% to their victory. The own leader Miguel Vargas was not given a chance to be elected. The PRM sees itself in the tradition of the legendary charismatic José Francisco Peña Gómez , who died in 1998 .

In the 2020 presidential election , Abinader ran again as a candidate for the Partido Revolucionario Moderno. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these have been moved from May 17 to July 5, 2020. In the elections he won with 52.3% and prevailed against Gonzalo Castillo from the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana , who could achieve votes of 37%. On August 16, he was sworn in as the 54th President of the Dominican Republic.
