Luis Aróstegui

Luis Aróstegui Gamboa OCD (born January 21, 1939 in Gatica , Bizkaia , Spain ) is a Carmelite religious. He was Superior General of the Teresian Carmel from 2003 to 2009 .

Life

Luis Aróstegui attended religious schools in Amorebieta-Etxano near Bilbao and Villafranca in the province of Navarre . In 1956 he joined the order of the Discalced Carmelites in Larrea-Amorebieta and studied philosophy in Vitoria and theology at the theological faculty of St. Theresa and St. John of the Cross in Rome. On April 5, 1964, he was ordained a priest in Rome . After a short time in a Carmelite convent in Panama , he was in Dallas in 1965working for Mexican immigrant care. From 1966 to 1967 he taught the history of religion and Christology at Saint Mary's Catholic University in Panama. From 1967 he studied religion and literature at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan ; During his dissertation ("Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Christian Ethics as a Critique of All Ethics") he lived near Vienna and Germany.

In 1972 he was a member of the convent in Monte Carlo , from 1973 he worked in the Pamplona monastery and taught philosophy at the diocesan seminary. In 1975 he was appointed superior in Amorebieta, in 1981 he was elected provincial superior of the order. From 1987 to 1999 he was Provincial of St. Joachim in Navarra with responsibilities for various monasteries in Panama, Guatemala, Peru and Chile. In 1999 he was elected director of the Spiritual Center in Larrea-Amorebieta. He was appointed by the Roman Curia as a representative of the Society "Saint Joachim of Navarre".

Luis Aróstegui was elected as the new general general in the 89th general chapter of the order and succeeds Camilo Maccise . As Superior General, he is also Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical Theological Faculty Teresianum in Rome.

On April 20, 2009 , Saverio Cannistrà was elected as his successor in the 90th General Chapter of the Discalced Carmelite Order in Domus Carmeli in Fátima , which was attended by more than 100 religious from 80 nations .
