Saverio Cannistrà

Saverio Antonio Gennario Cannistrà OCD (born October 3, 1958 in Catanzaro , Calabria , Italy ) is Superior General of the Teresian Carmel .

Life

Saverio Cannistrà studied Romance studies at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and received a doctorate in dogmatics from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . He taught at the religious school of the Discalced Carmelites Teresianum in Rome and was professor of Christology and theological anthropology at the Theological Faculty of Central Italy (Facoltà Teologica dell'Italia Centrale FITC) in Florence.

He joined the Discalced Carmelite Order in 1985 and made his profession in 1990 . In 1992 he was ordained a priest . He was Provincial of the Teresian Carmel in the Italian province of Tuscany .

On April 20, 2009, he was in the 90th General Chapter of the Order of Discalced Carmelites at Domus Carmeli in Fatima took part in the more than 100 members of religious orders from 80 nations, as the new general of the order selected. He succeeded Luis Aróstegui . On May 7, 2015, Cannistrà was re-elected General of the Order for a further six-year term at the 91st General Chapter of the Carmelites in Avila.

On July 8, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life for five years .
