Luis Lima (born September 12, 1948 in Córdoba ) is an Argentine opera singer with a tenor voice . Lima is one of the most famous tenors of his generation and of the second half of the 20th century. His teachers included u. a. Carlos Guichandut, Gina Cigna and Gina Bechi.

Life

He made his operatic debut in 1974 at the Teatro San Carlo in Lisbon as Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana . In 1977 he made his debut as Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor at La Scala in Milan , in 1978 he appeared as Alfredo in La traviata at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he was a permanent guest until 2001. In 1981 he made his debut as Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor with Edita Gruberová at the Vienna State Opera . He was connected to this house in a special way, where he sang almost all roles in his field in over 160 performances in over two decades.

In 1992 Lima was awarded the title of Austrian Chamber Singer for his achievements at this opera house . In 1984 he finally made his debut at the Covent Garden Opera House in London , where he subsequently appeared many times, including in Luchino Visconti's production of Don Carlos , which was captured for posterity. In addition, Luis Lima has appeared on almost every major opera stage in the world.

With the French opera director Jean-Pierre Ponnelle , to whom Luis Lima was particularly connected, he worked on many roles, including Don Josè in Carmen and Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana . These two roles and the title role in Verdi's Don Carlos were among the tenor's brilliant roles. Luis Lima has worked with almost all the major conductors of his generation, including Claudio Abbado , James Levine and Herbert von Karajan , under whose direction he a. a. sang Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca at the Salzburg Easter Festival in 1988 .
