Luis María Lasúrtegui

Luis María Lasúrtegui Berrida (born March 28, 1956 in the province of Gipuzkoa ) is a former Spanish rower . In 1984 he won an Olympic silver medal with Fernando Climent Huerta , the first and only Olympic medal for Spanish rowers. (As of 2019)

Athletic career

The 1.90 m tall Luis María Lasúrtegui was eleventh in 1974 with the four-man without a helmsman at the Junior World Championships . In 1979 he took eleventh place in two with helmsman at the World Championships in Bled with Miguel Solano and José Antonio Lopez . At the 1980 Olympic Games , Lasúrtegui rowed together with José Manuel Bermúdez , Isidro Martín , Salvador Verges and helmsman Xavier Sabriá in a four with helmsman . As the winners of their preliminary run, the Spaniards qualified directly for the finals and finished fourth, three and a half seconds behind bronze. In 1981 Lasúrtegui, José Ramón Oyarzábal , Martín and Bermúdez rowed in the four without a helmsman to sixth place at the World Championships in Munich. A year later, Lasúrtegui and Oyarzábal competed at the 1982 world championships in two without a helmsman and reached fourth place, in 1983 in Duisburg they both took sixth place.

At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Fernando Climent Huerta and Luis María Lasúrtegui competed in two without a helmsman . In the run-up, the Spaniards took second place behind Thomas Möllenkamp and Axel Wöstmann from the Federal Republic of Germany. The Spaniards also rowed into second place in the semifinals when they finished just behind the Romanians Petru Iosub and Valer Toma . In the final, the two Romanians had three seconds ahead of the Spaniards, who in turn crossed the finish line three seconds ahead of the Norwegians Hans Magnus Grepperud and Sverre Løken .

The following year the World Championships took place in Mechelen, the two Spaniards won the bronze medal behind the boat from the Soviet Union and the British. In 1986 in Nottingham , the two Spaniards finished ninth, in 1987 in Copenhagen they were twelfth. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, the two were eliminated in the repechage.
