Luis Martínez Serrano

Luis Martínez Serrano (born December 17, 1900 in Barcelona , † August 29, 1970 in Mexico City ) was a pianist, composer and conductor from Spain.

Martínez came to Buenos Aires with his parents at the age of six, where he studied at the Conservatory of La Prensa magazine and was a student of Ernesto Drangosch and Alberto Williams . In the following years he traveled with Zarzuela and operetta troupes through Latin America. Among other things, he lived in Mexico City for several years in the 1920s and worked from 1930 to 1943 as a radio and radio drama speaker , film composer and conductor of the Orfeón Catalán in Santiago de Chile. In between he kept returning to Buenos Aires, where he appeared as the accompanist of the singer Teresita Zazá , who premiered almost all of his tango compositions (including Hijo mío , Pajarito cantor , Presentimiento , Mujercita mía , Pobre madre ). His most successful composition was the tango ¿Dónde estás, corazón? , which was interpreted by Daniel Arroyo , Augusto Berto and many other well-known singers.

From 1943 until his death in 1970 Martínez lived as the head of the Promotora Hispano Americana de Musica (PHAM) in Mexico City. He also received Mexican citizenship during this time. Among other things, he was awarded the Order of the Aztec Eagle in 1941 , was a prizewinner at the Radiolandia Festival in 1962 and received a diploma from the Sociedad de Autores y Compositores de México (SACM) in 1966 . His daughter Lupe Serrano became known as a ballet dancer.
