Alberto Williams (born November 23, 1862 in Buenos Aires , † June 17, 1952 ) was an Argentine composer and conductor .

Life

Alberto Williams was born into a family of musicians; the grandfather Benjamin Williams was from Exeter . He received his first musical training in his hometown. In 1882 a scholarship enabled him to study at the Paris Conservatory . Benjamin Godard and in particular César Franck were among his composition teachers .

In 1889 he returned to Argentina, where he worked as a piano teacher, pianist, conductor and composer. In Buenos Aires he founded the Conservatorio de Música de Buenos Aires in 1893 , which opened over 100 branches across the country. He kept the management of the conservatory until 1941. He also held leading positions in various Argentine musical associations and was active as a writer. His extensive activities earned him the apostrophization of the "father of Argentine music".

Alberto Williams' work comprises 136 opus numbered works, including nine symphonies, almost all of which have programmatic titles. In addition to other orchestral works, he wrote chamber music, choirs, songs and character pieces for piano, with El rancho abandonado becoming particularly popular.

Williams' music is influenced by German and French Romanticism and Impressionism. A distinction is made between three creative phases: A phase that was initially strongly influenced by European sound ideas was followed by the inclusion of national folk music elements in his work from 1890 to 1910. The third period, which is increasingly opening up to global contemporary trends, begins in 1910 with his 2nd symphony.
