Luis Senarens

Luis Philip Sénarens (born on 24. April 1863 in New York City , died on 26. December 1939 ) was an American writer, known by numerous pulp fiction ( dime novels ) with the adventures of the young inventor Frank Reade, Jr. and Jack Wright .

Life

Senarens studied law at St. John's College in Brooklyn, where he graduated. He had started writing and selling stories at the age of 16 and in the 1880s took over the Frank Tousey Publications series Frank Reade, Jr.It was a dime-book series about a young inventor and his adventurous travels around the world in all kinds of airships, submarines, etc., in which lost worlds or races are often discovered and / or various villains are put to work. From 1891 he wrote similarly structured stories with the protagonist Jack Wright . In the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction , the series is assessed as follows:

"As a whole, the sequence hints at the worst in the dime-novel tradition: very bad writing, sadism, a rancorous disparaging of all races with the exception of WASPS, factual ignorance, coarse Imperialist Clichés about Manifest Destiny and the right of the White Man to rule the world. But the Frank Reade tales are, in the end, are also of interest for more positive reasons. They comprise a central set of examples of the development of the Edisonade, and were therefore central to the evolution of the dime novel from isolated Inventions toward Pulp sf, and were one of the central elements in the eventual creation of modern Children's SF. "

“Overall, the series shows the worst features of the dime novel: sloppily written, sadism, contemptuous treatment of all races with the exception of the WASPS , ignorance, imperialist clichés, according to which the white man is destined to rule the world. But the Frank Reade stories are ultimately not uninteresting, as they are exemplary for the development of the Edisonade and the penny novel and played a central role in the development from the inventor story to early pulp science fiction and in the beginnings of modern science fiction. Senarens wrote a total of perhaps 2000 stories, making it one of the most prolific writers in the early days of science fiction. He has been referred to as the "American Jules Verne ", which is not entirely wrong, because as different as the literary qualities may be, Verne and Senarens are so similar in their subjects, which allowed, for example, the same illustration for stories by Verne and Senarens - such as in Frank Reade, Jr. and His Queen Clipper of the Clouds (1890), which was heavily based on Verne , whose illustration was then partly used again for Verne's Maître du monde (1904). The series of Frank Reade novels was reprinted from 1979 in ten volumes as The Frank Reade Library , edited and introduced by Everett Franklin Bleiler .

In 1904 Senarens became editor at Frank Tousey , from 1913 he was editor of Moving Picture Stories Weekly , in 1923 he retired.

Senarens had married in 1895 and had a son and a daughter out of the marriage. He died in 1939 at the age of 76.
