Luiza Erundina de Sousa (born November 30, 1934 in Uiraúna , Paraíba ) is a Brazilian politician .

Life and political career

Luiza Erundina grew up in a small town in the hinterland of Paraíba. She obtained a bachelor's degree in social services from the Universidade Federal da Paraíba and a master's degree in sociology from the Universidade de São Paulo .

In 1980 she joined the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), the Labor Party, and was elected as a city councilor in the Câmara Munical of São Paulo for the period from March 15, 1983 to March 15, 1986. In the 1986 general election she successfully ran as a member of the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo and served from March 15, 1987 to December 31, 1988. In 1988 she ran for the mayor of São Paulo and was the 45th prefect of this metropolis from January 1, 1989 to January 1, 1993. She was the first female mayor of one of the metropolises in Latin America.

She then followed the appointment as Minister of the Federal Administration in the capital Brasília in the government of Itamar Franco from February 28, 1993 to May 20, 1993. In 1997 she joined the Partido Socialista Brasileiro (PSB). Since February 1, 1999, she has been a member of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies for the state of São Paulo .

As a reform politician, she criticized Dilma Rousseff , but no longer agreed to impeachment (impeachment) and to her PSB party on the occasion of the impeachment proceedings against Dilma Rousseff . She therefore switched to Partido Socialismo e Liberdade (PSOL) in 2016 . In the local elections in 2016, she reapplied for the office of prefect of the city of São Paulo, but was not elected when she achieved only 183,999 votes.

Awards

Her honors include u. a. 2001 the Diploma Bertha Lutz for her work as a women's rights activist.
