Typical rock formation in the Dolomites

The Lucanian Dolomites ( Italian Dolomiti lucane ) are a mountain range in the Italian region of Basilicata and part of the Lucanian Apennines . The small Lucanian Dolomites form the regional nature park of the same name, Parco Regionale di Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Lucane , installed in 1997 , which extends to the forests of Gallipoli- Cognato. Its name comes from the morphological similarity with the better known Dolomites of the Veneto and Trentino regions . This mountain group, which dominates the central part of the " Basento Valley", was formed 15 million years ago.
