The Lukaskirche is one of the two Evangelical Lutheran churches in the Hamburg district of Sasel and belongs to the Sasel parish, which was reunited in 1998. It is located in the southern part of the district between the streets Saseler Chaussee , Volksdorfer Weg and Frahmredder .

Building the church

In the early 1960s, soon after the completion of the Vicelinkirche on Saseler Markt, differences within the Sasel parish between the northern and southern parts of the community began to increase. From the southern part there was mainly criticism of the one-sided composition of the church council. In 1963 the parish was divided, the southern part chose the name "Lukaskirchengemeinde" and soon dealt very specifically with the construction plans for its own church.

After the first draft was rejected by the regional church , the architect Brigitte Eckert-von Holst received the order for a second draft, which was then implemented. In creating this design, the architect was guided by some key elements of the Gospel of Luke . The tent shape of the building was a popular motif when building new churches in the 1960s and is intended to show the temporary nature of the work in this world in the sense of the quote "we have no permanent city here" ( Heb. 13:14  LUT ) and to look out for " after the last building, which God himself will perform "request. Construction work began in November 1964, after the laying of the foundation stone on May 2, 1965, the church was consecrated on December 5, 1965.

The nave with its comparatively small size (22 m long, 15 m wide, 11 m high), its deeply drawn-down folded roof, the twelve rhombus-shaped windows and the dark roof shingles fits in with the predominant single-family houses in the area. The facade is kept simple except for a frieze band above the entrance. The free-standing 25 m high, also darkly covered tower, the nave, the parish hall, which was only converted from a previous church hall and the old pastorate in 1985, as well as the new pastorate form a relaxed group of buildings that harmonizes very well with the surrounding buildings. The architect deliberately planned the large plane tree in front of the church as the center of the church square.

Interior

Interior, view of the altar

The interior is dominated by a total of 12 colored windows by the Rahlstedt artist Hanno Edelmann . The ten glass windows on the side walls show events from the life of Jesus in the form that can only be found in the Gospel of Luke and not in other Gospels. The windows are designed in such a way that they get lighter and lighter on both sides towards the altar, whereby this area is also highlighted by the lighting. On the west side they show, starting at the entrance side, Zacharias with the angel Gabriel ( Lk 1,13ff  LUT ), proclamation to Mary ( Lk 1,28ff  LUT ), meeting of Mary and Elisabeth ( Lk 1,42f  LUT ), offering of the John in the temple ( Lk 1,59ff  LUT ) and in the immediate vicinity of the altar the birth of Jesus ( Lk 2,1-7  LUT ). On the east side, beginning from the altar, the Annunciation to the shepherds in the field ( Lk 2,8-14  LUT ), Simeon and the presentation in the temple ( Lk 2,22-35  LUT ), the twelve-year-old Jesus in the temple ( Lk 2,41ff  LUT ), the raising of the young man to Nain ( Lk 7,11-17  LUT ), the great sinner ( Lk 7,36-56  LUT ). In the sacristy there is a window with a depiction of the writing evangelist Luke with the winged bull as his symbol. The entrance hall is decorated with a window with the Emmaus scene ( Lk 24,13ff  LUT ).

The simple altar stands in front of a high white wall with a colored glass window in the shape of a Greek cross in the upper part. This symbol dispenses with the crucified Jesus, but refers to the symbol of the crown of thorns with light thorns and red drops of blood .

The silver dinnerware was made by Ragna Sperschneider .

Bells

Since 19 September 1965 there have been three bells from the Rincker foundry in the tower , the inscriptions of which together show the core of the Christmas message of the Gospel of Luke .

local community

The newly founded church gained considerable stability through the first pastor Willi Stark. He had been in charge of the southern district since 1955 and stayed at the Lukaskirche until 1974. His successor Gerhard Dosch stayed with the community until 1991, which is 15 years. Since 1980 the parish has had two parish offices. After the merger of the two Sasel congregations in 2004, the number of pastors was reduced to three, who are now equally responsible for both centers.
