Lukas Church from the southwest

The Lukaskirche is a Protestant church and is located in the north of the city of Worms .

building

The church was built in 1950 and replaced a wooden barrack that had served as an emergency church in the period immediately after the Second World War . The building was inaugurated on December 10, 1950. It was the 38th of a total of 49 " Bartning-Notkirchen ", church buildings that were built according to the plans of Otto Bartning (1883–1959). These churches were made from prefabricated parts with a wooden nail truss construction. Typical for the immediate post-war period are the clear, simple shapes and the lack of ornamentation. The striking gable facade, made of local sandstone, with its protruding corner tower, in which the main entrance is located, was a design by Philipp Hotz .

The construction of St. Luke's Church was financed from donations from the American Department of the Lutheran World Federation in order to remedy the lack of church space. The city center of Worms was almost completely destroyed by Allied air raids on February 21 and March 18, 1945.

The church building is now a cultural monument due to the monument protection law of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate .

local community

The building is used by the Evangelical St. Luke Congregation, which belongs to the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau .
