history

The first cable car from Lungern Obsee to Turren was built in 1960. It was a system based on the Bell / Wallmannsberger system . The runway was renewed at the end of the 1990s. However, the capacity utilization was too low and the railway operations went bankrupt, even though the municipality of Lungern had repeatedly invested money in the railways. In 2001 Paul Niederberger, former managing director of the Beckenried- Klewenalp -Bahn, bought the gondola lift, the mountain inns and the ski lifts from the liquidation assets and introduced the name “Panoramawelt Lungern-Schönbüel”. At that time , the Panoramawelt Lungern Schönbüel ran a mountain inn with a singing cowshed and the Turrenbeizli with an eagle's nest bar on Schönbüel . The two mountain inns on Lungern-Schönbüel as well as holiday apartments and a warehouse near Turren were available for overnight stays.

In 2007 the Panoramawelt also had to file for bankruptcy. By means of a debt restructuring moratorium, operations could continue. At the end of January 2012, a mast of the Turren-Schönbüel chairlift buckled. It was initially assumed that the pressure of large amounts of snow and too warm ground were the cause of the damage. During the investigation it turned out, however, that the foundation of the mast had not been built properly. Despite the missing mast, the chairlift could continue to operate with a quarter of its former capacity.

At the start of the winter season on December 22, 2012, the Panorama World ceased skiing. It was decided to dismantle the Schönbüel – Höch Gumme and Schönbüel – Arnifirst ski lifts . In March 2013, the Federal Office of Transport (FOT) ordered the railways to be shut down because the company had repeatedly violated the statutory duty of care and the requirements of the operating license. In May 2013 it became known that the mountain railways would no longer be operated. The trams were then up for sale and in July 2015, shortly before their final shutdown, went to the newly founded Lungern-Turren-Bahn AG of Obwalden entrepreneur Theo Breisacher, who modernized the railway and reopened it in May 2016. At the same time, a new building with administration rooms and apartments was built at the valley station. The 4- seater chairlift from Turren to Schönbüel and the ski lifts on Schönbüel were dismantled. The Lungern-Turren-Bahn cable car started operating at the beginning of May 2016 .
