Lunglei is a city in the Indian state of Mizoram . It is the second largest city in Mizoram after the capital Aizawl and is 165 km south of Aizawl.
The city is the capital of the Lunglei district . Lunglei has town status . The city is divided into 23 wards . On the cut-off date of the 2011 census it had 57,011 inhabitants, of which 29,474 were men and 27,537 were women. Christians make up the majority of the city's population with a share of over 91%. Hindus form a minority of over 6%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 98.3% and thus well above the national average. 90.2% belong to the Scheduled Tribes .
Most of the indigenous people in Lunglei District depend on agriculture and earn a living from growing crops. Selling coffee and rubber helps the local population earn an income. Rice and cotton are also grown .
