Life

Luther Tucker grew up in Memphis. His father, a carpenter, built him his first guitar and his mother, a boogie-woogie pianist, introduced him to Big Bill Broonzy . It was their intention to keep Luther away from bad influences. At Broonzy he met Robert Lockwood junior , who took him under his wing. His family moved from Memphis to Chicago, where he deepened his knowledge.

As an accompanist he worked with many greats of the Chicago blues. He had his first appearances at the age of 15 in the band of his uncle JT "Boogie" Brown. In Little Walter's band he was on many of the classic Walter recordings. He recorded with Otis Rush ( Chicago / The Blues / Today! Volume 2), Robben Ford , Sonny Boy Williamson II , Jimmy Rogers , Snooky Pryor , Muddy Waters ("She's Nineteen Years Old", "Five Long Years" and "Elevate." Me Mama), John Lee Hooker , Elvin Bishop and James Cotton . In the late 1960s he was a member of James Cottons Band, in 1971 he played guitar in John Lee Hooker's Coast-to-Coast Band. In 1973 he formed his own band, the Luther Tucker Band. In 1990 he recorded the album Sad Hours in Austin with various greats from the local scene ( Kim Wilson , Reese Wynans, George Rains, Tony Coleman, Mark Kazanoff and Russell Jackson).

Tucker played at the San Francisco Blues Festival in 1973, 1976 and 1979, as well as a number of times as an accompanist for friends such as Fenton Robinson, Freddie King and Jimmy Reed.

In 1993 Luther Tucker died of a heart attack at the age of 56. After his death a tribute concert was held, at which many of his companions performed (including John Lee Hooker, Elvin Bishop, Boz Scaggs , Mark Naftalin , Billy Boy Arnold and Freddie Roulette)
