Luther Garden 2014

The Luthergarten Wittenberg is a park southwest of the old town of Lutherstadt Wittenberg in Saxony-Anhalt .

background

In 2017, the city celebrates the 500th anniversary of the Reformation with the Luther Decade . Since 2009, 500 trees have been planted in and around the Luthergarten as a symbol of its global presence. The sentence attributed to Martin Luther "Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would perish, I would still plant an apple tree today" was the origin of the project.

Churches from all over the world and all denominations are invited to plant a tree themselves or to sponsor one of the 500 trees and at the same time to plant a tree in the area of their home church. The connection to Wittenberg is documented by respective labels. In this way a worldwide ecumenical network is created. A sign of the solidarity and reconciliation of the churches worldwide is set, which provides impulses for the city, the region, the country and beyond.

For the Roman Catholic Church , Cardinal Walter Kasper , President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity , planted a linden tree on November 1, 2009 in the central area of the Luther Garden . On January 23, 2011, his successor Kurt Koch planted an olive tree as a counterpart near the Roman papal basilica of St. Paul outside the walls .

layout

The project was initiated by the Lutheran World Federation and is based on plans by the landscape architect Andreas Kipar . The garden is oval in shape. At its center is a square in the form of a Luther rose , in the center of which there will be a cross clad with travertine panels. Seven paths lead symbolically from the square into the world; five of them form the so-called international avenues. Trees from different continents stand on them to emphasize the ecumenical character of the project. The tree for North America is e.g. B. the red maple is intended, for Africa the field maple and for the Asian and Pacific regions the fire maple . Orchards with native trees form the spaces between the avenues. The lawn is designed as a year-round flowering meadow. The new park takes into account the existing path system of the park facilities. Individual paths lead to the center of the city, to the castle church and the city church as monuments to the history of the Reformation. The garden is planted with 270 trees from all over the world. Another 230 trees are used in the area of the old ramparts of the city.
