Lucerne is a town in Luzerne County in the US state of Pennsylvania . The place, which is statuted as a borough , is eight kilometers north of Wilkes-Barre near the Susquehanna River . At the beginning of the 20th century, there were a variety of industrial activities in the place such as coal mines, grain mills or a foundry. In 1900 3817 people lived in Lucerne, in 1910 it was 5425 and in 1940 it was 7082. In 2000 the place had 2952 inhabitants.

Lucerne was founded in 1807 and incorporated in 1882. The village was first known as Hartseph Hollow and was renamed Mill Hollow in 1866 . When the village was organized as a borough in 1882 , it was given a new name and was renamed Lucerne after the county.
