Lyby fossils are the fossils found on Lyby Beach in Jutland . There are several sites in the area along the south-east coast of the Salling on the Skive Fjord, part of the Limfjord .

Dating

The fossils come mainly from the later Oligocene , a time interval within the Paleogene about 25 to 30 million years ago when the ancient North Sea flooded the entire area. The finds appear in various forms of conservation. There are bowls, stone cores and concretions .

species

The so-called Krabbeboller ( boller , Danish for ball ) are of particular interest to collectors. They are cannonball-like structures made of sedimentary rock, in which a fossil can sometimes be found. There are plant remains, such as pieces of wood and bark, but fossils from the animal kingdom are more common. Crustaceans in particular in the form of crabs , lobsters , locust crabs and barnacles are represented, as well as remains of molluscs such as snail shells, mussel shells and barnacles . Less common are corals , sea pens , sea urchins , turtle shells, bones of fish and whales.
