Lychas is a genus of the Buthidae family within the scorpions . It currently comprises 42 species.

features

2 Lychas mucronatus on cork

The genus was established on the basis of Lychas scutilus by Carl Ludwig Koch in 1845 - although two other species, which are now considered synonyms of Isometrus maculatus , were first mentioned - and revised by Kovarik in 1997.

Lychas can be distinguished from the other genera of the Buthidae family by a combination of diverse characteristics. These include the trichobothria pattern on the tibia of the palpus and well-developed spurs on the tibia of legs three and four. The comb organs have a fulcra ("joint"). The movable scissor finger has six cutting edges, consisting of small teeth. The carapace is perfectly horizontal in side view. The immobile chelicerae has a ventral tooth. The telson has a subcular spine that is only less pronounced in Lychas mjobergi . The fifth metasoma segment is keeled and has either a smooth or granular, but never punctured, surface structure. The mesosoma has one or less often three keels. The first two metasoma segments have eight or ten keels, the third segment six to ten keels. The comb organs have 8 ( L. infuscatus ) to 26 teeth. The coloring of the animals usually shows a darker pattern of spots on a yellow background, but the spots can also be missing. The size is approx. 22 to 87 mm.

Lychas are fast growing scorpions. The toxicity is of medical concern. Caution is advised for allergy sufferers and children, but a sting is not dangerous for a healthy person, but it is very painful.

Scorpions of the genus Lychas are popular terrarium animals . The most commonly grown species is Lychas mucronatus .

Occurrence and habitat

The species of the genus Lychas are mainly native to Southeast Asia from China to Australia . Species of the genus Lychas have also been found in South Africa . Most representatives prefer humid habitats, they live in the undergrowth, as well as on tree bark.
