The Lyman ( Ukrainian Лиман , Russian Лиман / Liman ) is a 16 km² lake in the Ukrainian Oblast of Kharkiv , 5 km from Siversky Donets .

The freshwater lake is 91 meters above sea level, has a shore length of about 16 km and a depth of about 2 meters. It emerged from the river bed of the Donets that once flowed here and today has a semicircular shape that tapers oblong to the southeast.

geography

The lake is located in the center of Kharkiv Oblast in the southeast of Smiyiv Raion . Close to the north bank is the urban-type Sloboschanske settlement and the village of Lyman , which has about 4,000 inhabitants , in the south-east the lake borders on the Balaklija Rajon with the nearby urban-type Andriivka settlement , and on the south bank is the Andrew Forest.

Smiyiv power plant

The Smijiw power plant (Ukrainian Зміiwвська ТЕС ), which was built between 1958 and 1969 and is one of the largest thermal power plants in Ukraine that uses the lake for cooling, is located on the lake near Sloboschanske . For this purpose, the lake was completely emptied in 1958, enlarged to almost double its original area and depth, and refilled with water from the Donets in 1962.
