Lyman Briggs

Lyman James Briggs (born May 7, 1874 in Assyria near Batte Creek , Michigan , † March 25, 1963 ) was an American engineer , physicist and administrator.

Life

Briggs studied at Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University ), the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and Johns Hopkins University .

From 1917, officially from 1920, he worked at the National Bureau of Standards . Briggs became assistant director of the NBS in 1926 and its director in 1932.

In 1922 he and Paul R. Heyl received the Magellanic Premium for the development of an induction compass. He was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1935, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1939, and the National Academy of Sciences in 1942 . In 1948 he received the Medal for Merit from US President Harry S. Truman .
