Lynne Truss (* 1955 in Kingston upon Thames ) is an English writer and journalist. She wrote the book Eats, Shoots & Leaves : The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation , which is very well known in Great Britain and the USA , in which, like Bastian Sick , she loosely dealt with the subject of linguistics . However, it is limited to the punctuation (punctuation) in English .

Life

She was named Columnist of the Year for her work for the Women's Journal . Truss hosted Cutting a Dash , a BBC Radio 4 series about punctuation. She is a literary critic for the Sunday Times and a familiar voice on BBC Radio 4. In 2005 she brought out Talk to the Hand on manners , which was published in 2007 under the title Für dich noch Sie Arschloch .

Her book Eats, Shoots & Leaves (November 2003) on punctuation abuse became a bestseller in both the UK and the US. The explanation in the book for a “zero tolerance rule for punctuation” is understood as a call to all pedants to stand up for punctuation.

The book title ( Eat, Shoot and Walk ) refers to a panda bear and is a mistake that is supposed to be in a book, which Truss does not mention. In the correct spelling ( Eats shoots and leaves ) the sentence would only say that the bear in question eats saplings and leaves. In the book, Truss also attacks the entertainment industry, which still supports bad punctuation. As examples, she cites Two Weeks Notice (correct: Two Weeks' Notice ), Who Framed Roger Rabbit ( question mark missing ) and the pop group Hear'Say ( wrong apostrophe ).

In 2009 she published the non-fiction book Get Her Off the Pitch: How Sport Took Over My Life as a résumé of her time as a sports journalist . Her novel Cat Out of Hell , published in 2014, is aimed at cat lovers .

reception

Eats, Shoots & Leaves was published in German translation with some comments on German punctuation. A comparable book was published in Sweden, which, based on the book by Lynne Truss, describes the peculiarities of Swedish punctuation ( Komma rätt, komma fel och komma till dot by Eva Halldinger). Nick Hornby praised the book in his My Life as a Reader .
