The Lyonel-Feininger-Gymnasium is a high school in the municipality of Mellingen in the Weimarer Land district in the Free State of Thuringia . The building for grades 5 to 9 is in Buttelstedt . It was named after the German-American artist Lyonel Feininger , who had visited Mellingen and also found motifs for painting there.

School profile

In the high school with a high profile in mathematics and natural sciences, the pupils are to be educated in the tradition of the Bauhaus worldview for openness, practical relevance, creativity, willingness to experiment and internationality. English, French, Latin and Russian are offered as foreign languages. The school offers the Abitur after twelve school years ( G8 ).

The fate of the namesake in Germany gives rise to a particularly critical examination of the Nazi past. On the occasion of the 74th anniversary of the liberation of Buchenwald Concentration Camp , which is twenty kilometers from the school, the survivor Raymond Renaud was invited to a contemporary witness interview.

The school is one of only 45 schools in Thuringia that are members of the School without Racism - School with Courage network . The former Prime Minister Christine Lieberknecht took over the sponsorship .

After the city of Weimar could not bring itself to an honorary citizenship of the then still living Buchenwald concentration camp survivor and political activist Stéphane Hessel , the school organized the exhibition Against Forgetting for the 100th birthday of Stéphane Hessel in 2017 for his 100th birthday Kromsdorf Palace Chapel - two years later the square in front of the Bauhaus Museum in Weimar was inaugurated as Stéphane-Hessel-Platz.

building

At the Mellingen location, the west wing and the connection between the two large parts of the building were completely renovated. All buildings received a facade renovation including new roofs. The virtual school tour, which can be started on the school website, provides an overview of the buildings at the Mellingen site.

At the Buttelstedt school campus, the outdoor track and long jump facility as well as part of the electrical systems inside were renewed in 2019.

The school has its own three-field gym in Großschwabhausen , the Josef Baumgartner Sports Hall , which was extensively renovated in 2019. Among other things, the underfloor heating, the acoustic ceiling, the lighting and the impact protection walls were renewed.
