Lysiosquilla scabricauda is a species of mantis shrimp that lives off the coasts of North and South America.

features

Lysiosquilla scabricauda reaches a maximum body length of about 30 centimeters. The body is smooth and has small elevations and tubercles only in the front part of the abdomen. The tentacles are very large and strong; they are usually longer than the carapace and have 9 to 10 long and sharp thorns. The body is strikingly drawn with light and dark stripes.

distribution and habitat

The distribution area of Lysiosquilla scabricauda is in the western Atlantic along the coasts of North, Central and South America. It stretches from Massachusetts , North and South Carolina via Florida , the US and Latin American coasts on the Gulf of Mexico to Brazil at Santa Catarina . The species is also found on the coasts of the Bahamas and Bermuda .

The crab lives in the muddy seabed at a depth of 50 to 200 meters.

Economic use

Although cancer can potentially be used for human nutrition, it is currently of no fishing relevance. It is landed as by-catch mainly when catching the economically important sea shrimp of the genus Farfantepenaeus .
